Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ!
Galatians 6:14

2022-04-10 The Humility of the King

Benjamin Rasmussen preached from the Great Christ Hymn in Philippians 2:5-11 on Palm Sunday. The title of his sermon is: Humility of the King.

Palm Sunday seems to be a glorious event where Jesus rides into Jerusalem. But the intention of Jesus coming into Jerusalem was not to exalt himself but to humble himself and become obedient to death. In Philippians 2:5-11, Paul uses Christ’s humility as an example for the church in Philippi. He says in verse 5, “Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus” Paul tells them that they are participators with Christ’s humility when he says “yours in Christ.” That is the foundation and the application point that Paul gives to the Philippian church. The following example of Christ’s humility is that Christ takes on humility by himself, where he is the one choosing to humble himself. Paul gives multiple points on Christ’s humility, leading to his ultimate humility in dying an evil and painful death on the cross. Paul does not end with the suffering of Christ but how God the father now takes action and “highly exalts him.”

For the Church, we must be participators with Christ, humble ourselves, and look at how we can serve the church body.
